Additional notes about support provided

Ahead of starting courses at universities, the Martingale Foundation provides a range of support to Scholars, including webinars with industry professionals and current PhD Students, one-to-one application and enrolment support, and cohort socials and events. We aim to build a strong network of Scholars and support them with their master’s and PhD applications.

Once Scholars have begun their studies at one of our partner universities, they will have access to a multi-year programme of support, including leadership training, career development and engagement opportunities. Through the programme, we provide access to a network of leading universities and businesses, including research and industry placements, and opportunities to meet with leading figures from across academia and industry.

There are two programmes depending on your stage of postgraduate study: the Masters Development Programme or the PhD Leadership Programme.

Scholars also take part in Solve for X: Where Academia Meets Industry, a holistic approach to skill-building and career progression, with Scholars participating in a residential retreat featuring group work, training sessions, and culminating in pitch presentations to an expert panel.

Martingale also strategically collaborates with charities in the education and social mobility sector, giving Scholars the unique opportunity to participate in community engagement such as tutoring and mentoring programmes, building further skills while supporting young people interested in STEM.

Additional details about application process

To apply for a Martingale Scholarship, you will need to complete our online application form. This helps us understand your background and your motivations to become a Martingale Scholar. You will need to provide an academic transcript, evidence of financial need, and two referees.

You should also seek further information from universities about the courses directly, including their graduate admissions departments.

We strongly encourage candidates to read the application guidance and application FAQs on our website before applying.

If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to an assessment centre, where you will be interviewed by an academic representative and a Martingale representative. These will assess your academic potential and your motivation to do postgraduate research. We will also assess how you would contribute to the cohort of Martingale Scholars.

If successful, candidates will then apply directly to one or more partner universities for an eligible course. Throughout this period, Martingale will run Masters and PhD application support workshops online.

You will complete a separate application for each university, which must be done in accordance with the university’s standard admissions process and deadlines. You will also submit your university preferences to Martingale.

Subject to being offered a place by at least one partner university, the Martingale Foundation will allocate one funded place to the candidate. Please note that if a university offer is conditional, the funding from Martingale will also be conditional.

The allocation process will match a candidate’s university preferences with the university’s candidate rankings. Through this process we aim to place a group of Martingale Scholars at each of our partner universities.
