About this opportunity

The University of Birmingham is pleased to be able to offer five Sanctuary Scholarships for undergraduate and postgraduate taught students starting at the University in 2024 who have sought refuge in the UK.

Sanctuary Scholars receive a full tuition-fee waiver and £5,000 per year of study to help with living costs. The University will also offer a fully funded place in University-owned accommodation to all Scholars for their first year of study.

Additional notes about eligibility criteria

The Sanctuary Scholarships are aimed at prospective students who have sought refuge in the UK and are unable to access student loans or other sources of statutory funding available in the UK, due to their residency status.

– Applicants must not be to access mainstream UK student funding due to their residency status.
– You must hold an offer from the University of Birmingham for a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate taught course in September 2024. Applicants should have an offer to study at the University of Birmingham by the deadline date. If you think that you will have any difficulty in meeting this deadline, please email us to let us know.
– You must have submitted, or be a dependant of someone who has submitted, an asylum application in the UK OR you need to have already been granted discretionary leave.
– You must hold a current offer from the University of Birmingham for a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate taught course in September 2024.

Additional details about application process

You can apply for a Sanctuary Scholarship through our online application form which can be accessed on the Sanctuary Scholarship webpage. The application form starts with a section giving the University authority to confirm your status with the Home Office and discuss your case with them. You need to complete this section first for us to be able to consider you for an award. Once you have submitted this first section of the form, you will then be able to access the main scholarship application form.

The selection process is as follows:

1. After you’ve submitted the online application form, it will be checked and you will be contact if further information is needed.
2. We will check that you meet the edibility criteria for an award. The University will need to contact the Home Office on your behalf, so it’s important that you complete the authorisation form as part of your scholarship application.
3. If your application is taken forward, the University’s Sanctuary Scholarship panel will select the applicants to invite to interview.
4. Those selected will be interviewed either online or at the University of Birmingham’s Edgbaston campus.
5. Candidates will be notified of the outcome by the end of June.
