City is proud to support equal access to higher education for forced migrants.

The Sanctuary Scholarship is for those seeking asylum or those granted Discretionary Leave to remain in the UK or some other form of temporary leave as a result of an asylum or human rights application and who cannot otherwise access student finance.

The Sanctuary Scholarship provides a full tuition fee waiver and a grant equivalent of a full maintenance loan from Student Finance England and equivalent of the City Cares bursary to cover living expenses.

Asylum seeker, Temporary refugee permission, Limited or Discretionary Leave to Remain (private/family life), Other forms of sanctuary (including Calais Leave, Section 67 Leave, UASC leave and Stateless Leave)

Other eligibility criteria

The Sanctuary Scholarship is for those seeking asylum or those granted Discretionary Leave to remain in the UK or some other form of temporary leave as a result of an asylum or human rights application and who cannot otherwise access tuition and maintenance loans from Student Finance as a direct result of their status.

Additional notes about eligibility criteria

In addition to the above, applicants must meet all the following criteria:

  • Have received a conditional or unconditional offer of full-time Undergraduate study from City, University of London, having applied through UCAS
  • Be new full-time entrants to City and starting the first year of their degree as a new student (i.e. those starting in Year 2, Year 3 and Year 4 are not eligible.)
  • Be currently attending a school, college, community or voluntary group which can provide a reference in support of your application
  • Must not hold an undergraduate/postgraduate degree awarded in the UK and/or abroad
  • As a direct result of your status you are not eligible for Tuition Fee Loans or Maintenance Loans from Student Finance England/Wales/NI/SAAS
  •  

If you are applying for a programme that requires you to pass a DBS check in order to undertake clinical placements and participate in the course, it is your responsibility to ensure you have the necessary documentation. Failure to pass the DBS checks, will result in a suspension/withdrawal from the programme.

As well as the full fee waiver and full living costs, successful applicants will also receive support and guidance from a designated staff member throughout.

This includes a personal statement, your rationale for higher education, your interruptions to prior education and support needs amongst other things. A referee statement in support of the application is also required and other supporting documentation such as evidence of your immigration status.  This is a competitive process and the selection panel can only consider information contained in the application.
