About this opportunity

The Phoenix Fellowship is a UK charity that supports refugee students, especially women, who wish to shape the future of science and medicine. The Fellowship provides long-term funding, connection, and support for refugee students with the potential to make meaningful contributions to science or medicine.
The Fellowship will offer five awards in its first year (2026/2027) and offer up to £20,000 per year for undergraduate or postgraduate study, which can go towards tuition, living costs, and/or other essential expenses. Selection is based on academic strength, financial need, and a demonstrated willingness to use their training for the benefit of others.

Refugee, Humanitarian protection, Indefinite Leave to Remain, Ukraine or Afghan Schemes, Other forms of sanctuary (including Calais Leave, Section 67 Leave, UASC leave and Stateless Leave)

Additional notes about eligibility criteria

To be eligible for the Phoenix Fellowship you must:

Reside full-time in the UK,
Hold (or be the dependent of someone who holds) one of the following immigration statuses under UK law: Refugee Status, Humanitarian Protection, Indefinite Leave to Remain, Section 67 Leave, Calais Leave, Stateless Leave, or leave under one of the Afghan Resettlement Schemes.
Be enrolled in, or accepted to (with either an unconditional or conditional offer), a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate programme at a UK university in Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, or one of the following scientific disciplines: Biomedical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, or Psychology.
Demonstrate financial need with supporting documentation,
Be under the age of 35 at the time of application,
Be eligible for UK Student Finance.

But eligibility alone is not the basis for selection. The Fellowship is intended for students who:

Consistently perform at a high academic standard,
Have maintained academic focus and progress even when circumstances have been challenging,
Pursue science or medicine not for personal success but with a view to contributing back to society,
Wish to carry forward the values of the Fellowship through their work.

We do not expect a perfect record or a polished story, and we recognise the complexity of your path. We therefore promise to read every application in that light. What matters most is that you are committed not only to your studies but also to improving the lives of others.

Additional notes about support provided

The Fellowship offers up to £20,000 per year for undergraduate or postgraduate study, which can go towards tuition, living costs, and/or other essential expenses. Please note that undergraduate fellows will be expected to apply for student finance to cover their tuition fees.

Phoenix Fellows will receive tailored pastoral support and the opportunity to receive mentoring throughout their studies.
