About this opportunity

The University of Warwick was awarded University of Sanctuary status in 2017 and has since that time offered financial support to sanctuary seeking students, to enable them to pursue higher education.

We offer 4 undergraduate scholarships of:

  • A non-repayable 100% tuition fee waiver.
  • A non-repayable grant equivalent to the maximum government Maintenance Loan.
  • Additional funding equivalent to the Warwick Bursary (up to £2,000 per year).

Additional notes about eligibility criteria

You must ensure that you meet all of the eligibility criteria outlined below in order to apply and you must be able to provide documentary evidence to verify your circumstances in relation to each criteria. Applicants who do not meet the full criteria will not be considered for an award.

Criteria 1: Sanctuary Eligibility Criteria

  1. You must be living in the UK at the time of your UG Sanctuary Scholarship application. The UK includes England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. We will not accept applications from students living outside of the UK.
  1. In addition, you must meet ONE of the following Sanctuary criteria:
  • You have sought asylum from the UK government (you are an asylum seeker) or were included as a dependent (spouse/child) on an application for asylum. Please note: Spouses/civil partners must have been the spouse/civil partner on the date on which the asylum application to the UK government was made. Children/step-children must have been aged under 18 on the date on which the asylum application to the UK government was made.

OR

  • You have received a decision on your claim for asylum and hold one of the following statuses from the UK government:
    • Humanitarian Protection(as a result of your asylum claim)
    • Limited Leave to Remain or Discretionary Leave to Remain (as a result of your asylum claim)
    • Some other form of temporary status (as a result of your asylum claim)

Criteria 2: Financial Eligibility Criteria

You must not be eligible for UK Government Student Financial Support (Tuition Fee Loans and Maintenance Loans). The following protection statuses are usually eligible for UK Government Student Financial Support and are not eligible for the UG Sanctuary Scholarship:

  • Refugee status
  • Students who have been granted protection under the Ukraine Schemes
  • Students who have been granted protection under the Afghan Schemes

Criteria 3: Education Eligibility Criteria

You must also meet  BOTH of the following educational criteria:

  1. You must hold a conditional or unconditional offer (or be awaiting a decision) for one of the following courses starting in September 2024:
  • International Foundation Programme
  • Undergraduate course:
    • Full-time course which lasts up to 4 years
    • Part-time course
    • These include courses leading to either a Bachelors degree (eg BA, BSc) or an Integrated Masters (eg MA, MSc)
    • For a full list of Undergraduate courses, please see the University’s Undergraduate course list

Please note the following courses arenot eligible:

  • Courses taught at Partner Colleges or Universities
  • 4-year graduate entry MBChB course
  • Year 1 Foundation courses in the Warwick Business School
  • Module based courses
  • Non-degree awards (Higher Education Diploma, Higher Education Certificate, Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma)
  1. You have not obtained an undergraduate degree or degree equivalent qualification from another institution or country.

Undergraduate Sanctuary Scholars are also eligible for:

  • 52-week on campus accommodation: There will be a charge for this accommodation and Undergraduate Sanctuary Scholars can choose to deduct some of this cost from their scholarship payment.
  • The Warwick Scholars Undergraduate Programme: This programme provides students with access to bespoke activities, along with academic, personal and professional development opportunities (such as internships and mentoring experiences) while they are at Warwick
  • Additional pastoral support: The University’s Widening Participation Lifecycle Team supports Undergraduate Sanctuary Scholars throughout their studies and will share information about opportunities that might be relevant to you. They can also signpost scholars to other areas of support across the university
